Thailand Eyes BRICS Membership, Looks to India for Support

New Delhi, India – Thailand has officially expressed its intention to join the BRICS grouping, seeking India’s backing as the country prepares to chair the international bloc in 2026. The announcement was made by H.E. Ambassador Chavanart Thangsumphant during Thailand’s National Day reception in New Delhi on 3 December.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Chavanart emphasized Thailand’s commitment to “inclusive multilateralism and enhanced South–South cooperation,” highlighting the country’s aspiration to strengthen partnerships with BRICS members, particularly India.

The reception, held at the Royal Thai Embassy, also celebrated the Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great and Father’s Day. The event brought together over 500 guests, including diplomats, business leaders, academics, media representatives, and members of the Thai community in India.

Ambassador Chavanart paid tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, reflecting on his lifelong dedication to Thailand’s development through the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy—a sustainable approach that continues to guide the nation. Guests also watched a special presentation on Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, followed by a moment of silence in her honor.

The reception underscored the deepening ties between Thailand and India this year.
