Bangkok, Thailand — Wat Arun Ratchawararam has announced updated management measures following public concern over photography services operating within the temple grounds, as the landmark adapts to increasing visitor traffic and evolving tourism demands.
The temple issued an apology after online discussions raised questions about the appropriateness of commercial photography inside the site. Temple authorities said the feedback has prompted a review of on-site regulations to better balance religious use with tourism activities.
Wat Arun currently welcomes an average of around 10,000 visitors per day, including worshippers and domestic and international tourists. With its popularity continuing to grow, officials said clearer oversight is needed to ensure a respectful and orderly environment for all visitors.
Under the new guidelines, photographers associated with traditional Thai costume rental shops must complete etiquette and conduct training in line with temple regulations before being allowed to offer services within the temple grounds. The aim is to ensure photography activities respect religious practices, public decorum, and the overall visitor experience.
To support the updated rules, Wat Arun is working closely with the Bangkok Yai Metropolitan Police, the Bangkok Yai District Office, and the Tourist Police. The coordinated effort is intended to ensure consistent management among photographers, business operators, and temple staff, while maintaining public order at one of Bangkok’s most visited attractions.
Temple officials said the measures are designed to protect Wat Arun’s image as a key cultural and tourism landmark, support sustainable tourism growth, and uphold the sanctity of the historic temple.
For travellers, Wat Arun remains open to visitors and photography for personal use, with authorities reminding guests that it is an active religious site where respectful behaviour is essential.
