Bangkok, Thailand — Messages of sympathy and support from governments around the world have been extended to Thailand following the fatal construction crane collapse that struck a passenger train in Sikhio District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, earlier this week.

The tragedy, which occurred on 14 January 2026, involved a crane from the Thai–Chinese high-speed rail construction project falling onto Special Express Train No. 21, traveling between Nong Nam Khun Station and Sikhio Station. Authorities have since confirmed significant casualties, prompting international responses and swift action from Thai officials.

According to the latest official situation report released at 5:20 p.m. on January 14, the incident affected 99 people. Authorities confirmed:

  • 32 fatalities

  • 7 critically injured

  • 19 with moderate injuries

  • 3 individuals still missing

All injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals and are receiving appropriate medical treatment. Identity verification procedures for the deceased are currently underway.

Investigation, Compensation, and Legal Action

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the collapse. Two independent inquiry panels—one under the Ministry of Transport and another led by the SRT Board—are working alongside specialists from the Engineering Institute of Thailand and the Council of Engineers. Findings are expected within 15 days.

Preliminary compensation has been set at approximately 1 million baht per fatality, with liability expected to be covered by the contractor’s insurance.

Rail authorities confirmed that the damaged train has been cleared from the site, while crews prepare to dismantle a steel launcher structure weighing over 400 tons. Repairs to the rail line are expected to take about seven days, during which train services on the affected route remain suspended.

Project contractor Italian-Thai Development Plc is facing a criminal complaint related to negligence causing death, alongside pending civil claims. The SRT has also indicated that blacklisting measures may be considered if serious misconduct is confirmed.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to accountability, safety reforms, and comprehensive care for those affected.

We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the tragic train accident in Nakhon Ratchasima.
