Thailand Backs Switzerland’s 2026 OSCE Chairpersonship

Bangkok, Thailand – Thailand has reaffirmed its support for Switzerland’s upcoming 2026 Chairpersonship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) following high-level talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 5 February 2026.

Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, welcomed H.E. Mr. Pedro Zwahlen, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to Thailand, for discussions covering Switzerland’s priorities for its leadership of the OSCE and key regional developments.

Switzerland’s 2026 OSCE Priorities

During the meeting, Ambassador Zwahlen outlined Switzerland’s strategic focus for its 2026 OSCE Chairpersonship. Central themes include reinforcing the Helsinki Principles, which form the foundation of the organization’s commitments to comprehensive security, cooperation, and stability across its participating states.

Switzerland is expected to emphasize:

  • Strengthening inclusive multilateral diplomacy

  • Anticipating the impact of emerging technologies on security

  • Promoting democracy, rule of law, and human rights

  • Ensuring the OSCE remains responsive and operational in a changing global landscape

The OSCE, which brings together 57 participating states across Europe, Central Asia, and North America, plays a critical role in conflict prevention, crisis management, and post-conflict rehabilitation.

Thailand’s Role as a Partner for Cooperation

Thailand reaffirmed its support for Switzerland’s leadership and highlighted ongoing engagement through the OSCE’s Partner for Cooperation framework. Although not a participating State, Thailand has been an active partner, contributing to dialogue on regional security and cross-continental collaboration.

The discussions also touched on preparations for the OSCE Asian Conference 2026, which Thailand will co-chair alongside Finland. The conference is expected to further strengthen ties between the OSCE and its Asian partners, reinforcing Thailand’s growing diplomatic presence on the international stage.

Regional Developments Discussed

In addition to multilateral cooperation, both sides exchanged views on regional developments, including the situation along the Thailand–Cambodia border. The dialogue reflects Thailand’s continued commitment to maintaining stability and constructive engagement within Southeast Asia.

Strengthening Thailand–Switzerland Relations

The meeting underscores the steady and constructive relations between Thailand and Switzerland, particularly in the areas of diplomacy and international cooperation. As Switzerland prepares to assume its OSCE Chairpersonship in 2026, Thailand’s support signals continued collaboration on global governance, regional security, and multilateral dialogue.

For Thailand, active participation in international forums such as the OSCE reinforces its role as a bridge between Asia and Europe, aligning with the country’s broader diplomatic and strategic interests.
