Finland’s Ambassador to Thailand Shares Insights on Happiness, Wellbeing & Cultural Connection

Ambassador Kristiina Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos on Happiness, Nature and Finland–Thailand Relations

In an exclusive interview with Indo Thai News, H.E. Kristiina Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos, Ambassador of Finland to Thailand, shared her insights on Finnish happiness, wellbeing, and the strengthening ties between Finland and Thailand.

Having officially assumed her post in September 2024, Ambassador Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos brings over 25 years of experience from Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her extensive international career has shaped a global perspective, with her current role in Thailand holding particular personal and professional significance.

Describing herself as “very Finnish, positive, and people-oriented,” she highlighted her passion for building meaningful connections across cultures—an approach that continues to define her diplomatic work.

Understanding Finland’s Happiness

Finland has consistently ranked as the world’s happiest country for eight consecutive years, but the Ambassador offered a deeper perspective.

“It is not about happiness in the traditional sense,” she explained. “It is more about contentment — built on trust, equality, transparency, and good governance.”

She highlighted that Finland’s societal structure ensures:

  • Low corruption

  • Equal opportunities across regions and genders

  • Access to high-quality education for all

These factors create a stable environment where citizens feel secure and balanced — a key contributor to overall wellbeing.

The Role of Nature in Finnish Life

A strong connection with nature is central to Finnish culture. Whether in forests, lakesides, or countryside cottages, Finns actively seek time away from urban life to restore balance.

“In Finland, nature is not a luxury — it is a necessity,” she noted.

While Bangkok’s fast-paced environment is vastly different, the Ambassador expressed appreciation for the city’s green spaces and parks, where she often spends time jogging and walking.

“I see that people in Bangkok also value being close to nature, even within a big city. That is something we share.”

Work-Life Balance and Wellbeing

Ambassador Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos emphasized the importance of work-life balance, a cornerstone of Finnish society.

“To be productive, you need time to rest, reflect, and be with your family,” she said.

While acknowledging the challenges of urban life in Bangkok — including long commutes and busy schedules — she observed that many Thai people are skilled at finding small moments of peace and reflection in their daily routines.

Life in Thailand

Having previously visited Thailand in the mid-1990s, the Ambassador was particularly impressed by the country’s transformation.

“The development of Bangkok is remarkable. The scale of change and modernization is truly impressive.”

Her daily schedule as Ambassador is demanding, involving:

  • Diplomatic meetings

  • Policy discussions

  • Engagement with Thai authorities and stakeholders

  • Managing embassy operations

Despite this, she makes time to explore Bangkok’s vibrant culture, markets, and renowned cuisine.

Cultural Differences and Personal Reflections

When asked about what she misses from Finland, she mentioned a uniquely Finnish tradition — winter swimming in icy waters, something impossible to replicate in Thailand’s tropical climate.

However, she has embraced local habits, particularly spending time outdoors in parks and engaging with the community.

Strengthening Finland–Thailand Relations

Looking ahead, the Ambassador expressed optimism about building stronger cultural and people-to-people connections between Finland and Thailand.

She encouraged visitors to explore Thailand beyond its beaches, highlighting the country’s rich history, culture, and natural diversity.

A Message to the Community

Concluding the conversation, Ambassador Kuvaja-Xanthopoulos shared a heartfelt message:

“I wish everyone health, happiness, prosperity, and above all — peace in the world.”
