Thailand’s King and Queen Join Royal Celebrations in Sweden

Their Majesties King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida are currently on an official royal visit to Sweden from April 29 to May 2, 2026, following an invitation from King Carl XVI Gustaf. The visit coincides with the Swedish monarch’s 80th birthday celebrations, drawing royals and dignitaries from around the world.

Held in the capital city of Stockholm, the multi-day program features a series of formal ceremonies and cultural engagements hosted by the Swedish Royal Family. The occasion highlights the enduring diplomatic relationship between Thailand and Sweden, rooted in decades of cooperation and mutual respect.

Royal Welcome at Stockholm Palace

The visit commenced with a formal welcome dinner on April 29 at Stockholm Palace, where Their Majesties joined fellow royals and distinguished guests. The evening brought together an international gathering of monarchs and representatives, marking the start of the celebratory events.

Queen Suthida drew attention for her elegant attire, wearing the traditional Chud Thai Dusit, one of Thailand’s eight recognized national costumes—offering a graceful representation of Thai heritage on the global stage.

Ceremonies and Traditions

On April 30, the royal couple attended a Te Deum thanksgiving service held at the Royal Chapel within Stockholm Palace, honoring the Swedish King’s milestone birthday. The service was followed by a formal military ceremony in the palace’s outer courtyard, showcasing Sweden’s ceremonial traditions.

For the daytime events, Queen Suthida appeared in Chud Thai Boromphiman, another iconic Thai national costume, further highlighting Thailand’s cultural identity during the high-profile occasion.

Strengthening Thailand–Sweden Relations

This royal visit underscores the strong and friendly ties between Thailand and Sweden. Beyond ceremonial engagements, such visits play a key role in reinforcing diplomatic relations, cultural exchange, and future collaboration between the two nations.

As global leaders and royals gather in Stockholm, the presence of Thailand’s King and Queen reflects the country’s continued engagement on the international stage—blending tradition, diplomacy, and cultural pride.
