1,000 Baht Disability Allowance Moves Closer to Approval

BANGKOK, Thailand — The National Commission for Promotion and Development of Disabled Persons’ Life Quality has approved proposals aimed at increasing financial support for persons with disabilities and strengthening assistance for family caregivers.

Among the measures endorsed by the commission is an increase in the monthly disability allowance from 800 baht to 1,000 baht for persons with disabilities under the age of 18 who do not receive benefits under the State Welfare Card program. The proposal is expected to be submitted to the Cabinet for consideration.

The commission also approved revisions to the disability caregiver system that would allow relatives and family members to become officially recognized caregivers after completing the required training and certification process.

Under the proposed framework, certified caregivers would receive compensation of 60 baht per hour for up to six hours per day and up to 30 days per month. The maximum monthly compensation would be 10,800 baht.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Yodchanan Wongsawat said the initiative would provide support for family members who reduce their working hours or leave employment to care for persons with disabilities at home.

He also noted that the government plans to place greater emphasis on disability employment within public-sector agencies while encouraging compliance with employment quotas and related legal requirements.

Kantapong Rangsesawang, Permanent Secretary for Social Development and Human Security, said both proposals are expected to be submitted to the Cabinet this month. If additional procedural steps are required, consideration may be postponed until early July.
