Giving out a strong message of zero-tolerance against illegal drugs, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pledged to cut the supply line and stop production of drugs which are sent to the mainland of India from Assam.
While speaking at a seized drug disposal event at Nagaon on Sunday, the Chief Minister said, “I know that drugs are sent to the mainland of India from Assam. It’s my national duty to cut the supply line and stop production.”
Over the past two days, Sarma participated in four different events where seized drugs worth Rs 170 crore were burnt in public functions in four districts of the state under Assam government’s campaign against narcotics and to make the state drugs-free.
On Saturday, the Chief Minister had said that the Assam Police has been given complete “operational freedom” to deal with drug traffickers and dealers. The CM said that police been asked to “act decisively” to uproot the drug menace from the society.
Sarma at another similar event in Diphu said the police have been given operational freedom to act firmly and decisively within the law to uproot the illegal trade. He added that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had during his visit to Assam two years ago held deliberations with the Director Generals of Police (DGPs) of the north-eastern states on ways to cut drug supply lines.
CM Sarma informed the media in Diphu that drugs worth Rs 163 crore have been seized and 1,493 people arrested since his government assumed office two months ago.
