Aung San Suu Kyi Jailed for four Years in Myanmar

A Myanmar court has sentenced civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison for inciting dissent against the military and violating COVID rules.

Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, 76, is also facing trial on many other charges including corruption. Today he has been sentenced for inciting dissent against the army and violating the Kovid rules.

The cases against Suu Kyi are widely seen as a conspiracy to defame her and prevent her from contesting the next election. The Constitution of the country prohibits anyone from holding a high office or becoming an MP-MLA after being sentenced to jail. In Myanmar’s elections in November, Suu Kyi’s party had won a unilateral victory, while the party affiliated with the army had to face defeat in several seats. The army then alleged rigging of the voting, but independent election observers did not find any major irregularities in the investigation.

Suu Kyi’s popularity remains intact and people still consider her a symbol of the struggle against military rule. There was a nationwide protest against the army’s capture of power and it was ruthlessly crushed by the security forces. Statistics from the “Assistance Association for Political Prisoners” show that around 1300 civilians died in the action of security forces.
