A five-month-old baby girl in the UK is ‘turning to stone’ due to a rare genetic condition. Baby Lexi Robbins has been diagnosed with an incurable disease that affects only one in two million people. The baby’s parents are warning other families to look for possible signs. Born on January 31, Lexi was like any other healthy baby girl but is now in the grip of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva, a life-limiting disease. His parents Alex and Dave are from the Hertfordshire region of Great Britain. One day he noticed that there was no movement in the thumb of the girl’s hand and the big toe looked absolutely unusual. Doctors ascertained his condition and confirmed the disease.
Actually, in this situation, muscles and connective tissue take the place of bone. The disease can cause bone formation outside the structure, making it difficult to move. The condition is often compared to turning the body into stone. People with the disease can lie in bed till the age of 20 and their life expectancy is about 40 years.
In April, X-rays showed that Lexi’s toe was swollen and the thumbs were fused. 29-year-old mother Alex said, “Initially we were told after X-ray tests that she might have a syndrome and would not be able to walk. We could not believe it because at that time the child was physically very strong and could hit her legs.” We were not completely satisfied, so in May, after doing a little research, we found out this disease and took it to the specialist.
By the end of May, we had to do a genetic test, then an X-ray, but it took six weeks for the results of the genetic test.” Lexi’s parents are heartbroken because of this. They have spoken to experts and the battle to save the girl’s life is not over yet. Both are getting a lot of support from other parents.
