On arrival, hotel guests are presented with a handmade pouch made from upcycled waste washed up on local beaches thanks to a partnership with “Souvenirs from the Sea”, a local group founded by Ms Wiyada Kowsanti, who has lived her life beside the Andaman Sea and who presciently saw the value in the fishing nets, floats, sandals and other discarded items that washed ashore.

Colourful tote bags, key chains and other products skillfully assembled by the Souvenirs from the Sea team are available at the resort’s Banyan Tree Gallery Krabi, alongside many other locally-sourced sustainable handcrafts underlining Banyan Tree’s longstanding commitment to supporting the communities in which they operate.

Initiated by the hotel’s Thailand-based owning company, Asset World Corporation (AWC), The Gallery serves a platform to promote local designs and sustainable products at AWC hotels throughout Thailand.

“At Banyan Tree Gallery Krabi, we try to use a minimum of packaging, and when we do, it’s with environmentally-friendly recycled or biodegradable materials,” said Banyan Tree Krabi’s Sustainability Manager Thepsuda Loyjiw. “We constantly collaborate with local artisans and small-scale producers to help reduce our carbon footprint at the resort.”

The local artists and vendors are also given an opportunity to showcase eco-conscious products directly to guests at the resort’s periodic pop-up souvenir shops.

One such local artisan is Ms. Rustiya Limtrakul, the creator of “Eco Print by Rustiya”, who tends a stall offering her distinctive Eco Print wearable art—a natural dyeing method that uses tropical leaves and flowers to imprint vibrant, organic patterns onto fabric. Her eco-conscious handmade designs authentically capture the natural beauty of Krabi.

The hotel’s two main restaurants, The Naga Kitchen and Saffron, take additional steps to support the local community: purchasing fish from neighbouring fishermen; coffee and tea from Thai plantations; and honey from a Krabi farmer.

To mitigate potential harm and to foster a sense of harmony, the Buddha advised his disciples to observe a period of retreat and seclusion during the rainy season.

The term “Vassa” itself is derived from the Pali language, one of the ancient languages used to preserve the Buddhist scriptures. It simply means “rain,” referring to the rainy season during which this period of retreat is observed.

Activities during Vassa

Vassa is a time of increased spiritual devotion, meditation, and study of Buddhist scriptures. Monks and nuns dedicate themselves to deepening their understanding of the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) and intensify their meditation practices to cultivate mindfulness, insight, and wisdom. Chaitra Navratri – Different Names Across India

The celebrations of Chaitra Navratri vary from region to region, with different names and customs associated with the festival.

In North India, it is called Chaitra Navratri, and the celebrations are marked with fasting, prayers, and cultural activities. In South India, the festival is known as Ugadi, which marks the beginning of the new year according to the Hindu calendar.

In Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka, it is celebrated as Gudi Padwa, which marks the beginning of the new year according to the lunar calendar. In the Sindhi community, it is celebrated as Cheti Chand, which marks the birth of Ishtadeva Uderolal or Jhulelal, the patron saint of Sindhis.

Celebrations and Customs

The celebrations of Chaitra Navratri begin with the Ghatasthapana, which is the installation of the Kalash or pot, which symbolises the presence of divine power in the household. The Kalash is worshipped for nine days, and on the tenth day, it is immersed in a nearby river or pond.

Fasting, prayers, and chanting hymns and mantras mark the nine-day festival. Devotees offer the goddess flowers, fruits, and sweets and perform aarti, a ritual of worshipping the deity by waving a lamp in front of the idol. The devotees also observe strict dietary restrictions during the nine days and consume only vegetarian food.

The tenth day of Chaitra Navratri is celebrated as Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama. The day is marked with special prayers and celebrations, and devotees offer sweets and fruits to Lord Rama. In some parts of the country, a grand procession is organised to celebrate the birthday of Lord Rama, with devotees carrying idols of the deity on a chariot.

The origins of Makha Bucha Day date back to more than 2,500 years ago when 1,250 disciples of the Buddha gathered spontaneously without being summoned to hear him preach.

This historic event occurred in Rajgir, India, on the full moon day of the third lunar month. Since then, the day has been observed as an important occasion to celebrate the life of Buddha and propagate his teachings.

On the Day of Magha Puja

On this auspicious day, Thai Buddhists wake up early and make merit by giving alms to monks. They then participate in a traditional ceremony known as wian tian, where they walk around the temple three times while holding candles, incense, and flowers. The process symbolizes the Buddhist triple gems of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.

Another important part of the Makha Bucha Day celebration is the sabaan naam ceremony. It involves pouring water over the Buddha statue to cleanse it and symbolize washing away one’s sins and impurities.

It is not a public holiday but is celebrated nationwide when people gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to release floating lanterns or Krathongs on waterways.

When is Loy Krathong Festival celebrated?

Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated on the evening of the 12th full moon of the Thai lunar calendar. It usually falls in the month of November, according to the Western calendar.  Therefore, the Loy Kratong date is not fixed. It changes every year depending on the full moon.

In 2022, it will take place on the evening of 8th November.

What is the meaning of Loy Krathong?

The word loy in Thai means ‘to float’ and krathong translates to ‘basket or boat’, so the meaning of Loy Krathong is ‘float a basket’.

A krathong is a small lotus-shaped boat traditionally made from banana leaves and decorated with flowers. In the center of the Krathong, there are traditionally 3 sticks of incense and a lit candle, and other things like hair and coins.

As its name implies, on the evening of the festival, Thai people gather around rivers, lakes, and canals to release lotus-shaped baskets.

Why is Loy Krathong celebrated?

Loy Krathong, which originated in the ancient Sukhothai Kingdom around 800 years ago, is celebrated to pay respect to and thank the Goddess of Water (called Pra Mae Khongkha) for a year’s worth of her abundant supply, ask for an apology for polluting the waters, and pay respect to the Buddha.

Nowadays, it is also a way to get rid of negativity gathered during the previous year and welcome good fortune in the coming year.

How do people celebrate Loy Krathong Festival today?

Traditionally Thai people will begin the festival by making their Krathongs at home with friends and family, although many do also buy them from local shops.

At nightfall, everyone heads to waterways or temples where religious rituals will take place and the Krathongs are released.
