Thailand Commemorates Navamindra Maharaj Day on 13 October

This Sunday, October 13, Thailand will observe Navamindra Maharaj Day, a national holiday established to honor the late His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (King Rama IX). Endorsed and officially designated by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, this commemorative day, introduced in 2023, pays tribute to the beloved monarch whose reign shaped modern Thailand through his visionary leadership and lifelong dedication to the people.

The title Navamindra Maharaj, meaning the “ninth great king,” reflects King Bhumibol’s position as the ninth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty and acknowledges his profound impact on the nation. During his 70-year reign, he was celebrated for launching countless royal development projects focused on sustainability, poverty alleviation, and national unity.

King Bhumibol passed away on October 13, 2016, at the age of 88 at Siriraj Hospital. This year marks the eighth anniversary of his passing, and the nation will once again remember him for his contributions to Thailand’s social, economic, and environmental well-being.

Navamindra Maharaj Day serves as a moment of national reflection and a celebration of King Bhumibol’s enduring legacy. His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s designation of this day reinforces the importance of continuing the late king’s mission of community development and care for the Thai people. Ceremonies, prayers, and events will be held across the country in remembrance of the beloved King Rama IX.
