Floods Wreak Havoc in Maharashtra, 129 Dead

In Maharashtra, the total death toll in rain-related accidents together yesterday and today has risen to 129. So far 44 people have died in a landslide near a village in coastal Raigad district. According to the police, the death toll may increase in this accident that took place in Talai village of Mahad tehsil. It has been raining continuously in many parts of Maharashtra for the last several days, due to which many accidents have also taken place. After the incident, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray and Union Home Minister Amit Shah took stock of the situation.

State Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced that financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh will be given to his family members for the death related to the flood. While the injured will be given free treatment. At the same time, PM Narendra Modi has announced a helping hand for the families of those who lost their lives due to landslide in Raigad, Maharashtra. Prime Minister’s Office said that PM Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to landslide in Raigad, Maharashtra. 50,000 will be given to the injured.

At the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the accident caused by heavy rains and landslides in Raigad, Maharashtra is very sad. A police official said that several bodies have been recovered so far from the site of the landslide. Locals say that more people are feared trapped under the debris. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is reviewing the situation. A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has reached Mahad, about 160 km from Mumbai, and is engaged in relief and rescue operations. Another team is also likely to arrive soon.

On the other hand, extremely heavy rains in Maharashtra’s Mahabaleshwar and Navaja in Satara district in the last two days have caused flooding in some parts of the adjoining coastal region of the state, especially in Ratnagiri and Raigad districts. Several places in these two districts of Konkan region are submerged in water and the administration is taking steps to take the stranded people to safer places.
