Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister died when their helicopter crashed as it was crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog, an Iranian official told news agency Reuters.

Tehran, Iran (May 19, 2024) – A tragic helicopter crash in the mountainous northwest of Iran has resulted in the deaths of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the foreign minister, and several other high-ranking officials.

The incident occurred on Sunday in a foggy forested area, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

According to initial reports, the helicopter was en route across rugged terrain when it encountered heavy fog,  leading to the crash. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the remote crash site, battling difficult weather conditions and challenging geography to reach the wreckage.

An Iranian official confirmed to Reuters that after an extensive search, no sign of life was found at the scene. “The helicopter carrying President Raisi, the foreign minister, and other officials crashed in the mountains. Rescue teams have confirmed that there are no survivors,” the official stated.
