The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported an increase in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 19, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 278,988 new cases reported across India.
Karnataka has reported 41,457 cases followed by Maharashtra registering 39207 cases, and Kerala stands at 28,481 cases at this time. This is the seventh day that the cases crossed the 200,000 mark in a while.
Karnataka has seen a rapid increase in cases taking the lead with the most positive COVID patients. Bengaluru accounted for the highest number at 25,595. Karnataka food and civil supplies and forest minister Umesh Katti faces controversy on the mask rules. He later claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the one who said it was not mandatory.
The Supreme Court recently published data on the compensation for COVID deaths. The court-mandated that all fatalities including accidents and suicides within 30 days of testing positive will receive compensation. Some states claimed a very high number of compensations concerning reported COVID deaths. Gujarat for example claimed 89,633 in contrast to 10,094 reported deaths. So far, 68,370 has been approved compensating 58,840 families. Telangana has 29,000 claims with 15,270 approved compared to their reported deaths of 3, 993.
Although there has been a gap, the court is more focused on ensuring that the compensations are distributed. At the moment, the compensation is RS 50,000.
