India Monsoon Update

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert related to heavy rains in five districts of Madhya Pradesh. There is a possibility of heavy rain at isolated places in five districts of Madhya Pradesh – Vidisha, Sagar, Betul, Chhindwara and Balaghat. There is a possibility of rain at isolated places in the districts of Bhopal, Jabalpur, Rewa, Shahdol, Hoshangabad, Sagar and Chambal divisions.

Heavy rain continues in Uttarakhand and Kerala. Orange alert has been issued for Sunday in nine districts of Kerala. An ‘Orange Alert’ was issued with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast in Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts. A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued to all other districts.

Two people have reportedly died and seven others are missing after a cloudburst in Jumma village of Dharchula in Uttarakhand.

According to sources, 7 houses have also been damaged.

The State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and administration have left for on-the-spot verification.

The cloudburst has also caused water logging in Dharchula’s NHPC Colony.

Moderate to heavy rains may occur over Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and parts of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Light rain is possible over Ladakh, rest of Northeast India and Saurashtra and Kutch.

Light to moderate rain with isolated heavy falls are very likely over parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, parts of Bihar, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Telangana, Lakshadweep and Uttarakhand Is.

Light to moderate rain is possible over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan & Goa, Gujarat region, East Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and parts of Delhi.

The IMD website said, ‘Gust wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is expected over southwest and west central Arabian Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these sea areas. Southwest Monsoon has been vigorous over Kerala. Heavy rains were recorded at Vaikom in Kottayam district, which received 10 cm of rain, followed by Kakkayam in Kozhikode district and Vellarikundu in Kasaragod district with eight cm each.
