India will chair the United Nations Security Council from August 1. During this month-long presidency, India will have the command of three major UN missions – maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism programmes. India’s Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations TS Tirumurti said that it is a unique honor for us. We are going to preside over the US Security Council at a time when we celebrate the 75th anniversary of our independence this month. The United Nations Security Council with 15 member states is the most powerful unit of the UN, which is chaired by the member states in turn.
India’s working day for the presidency of the United Nations Security Council will begin on Monday, 2 August. On this day, Tirumurti will give information about this month’s program of the press conference. According to the report, India’s Ambassador TS Tirumurti has apprised the UN General Assembly chief about the main activities to be taken up during India’s presidency. TS Tirumurti, in a video message on the eve of taking over the presidency, said that it is a special honor for us to take over the chairmanship of the Security Council in the same month in which we are celebrating our 75th Independence Day.
According to the program released by the United Nations, Tirumurti will also provide work details to those member countries of the United Nations which are not members of the council. India’s two-year term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council began on January 1, 2021. This is India’s first presidency during the 2021-22 term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. India will again chair the Security Council in December next year. During his presidency, India will focus on issues such as maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism and will preside over high-level programs on these issues and will emphasize on making concrete strategies. Tirumurti said India has been emphasizing on fighting terrorism both within and outside the Council. Not only have we strengthened efforts to fight terrorism, especially the financing of terrorism, but we have also stopped attempts to dilute the focus on terrorism. General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir thanked the Indian Ambassador for holding most of the Security Council meetings in person and for the rich program of the Security Council during the month of August.
