PM Modi’s Upcoming Visit to Thailand: What We Know So Far

Bangkok, Thailand – Indian Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi will make an official visit to Thailand on April 3-4, 2025, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 12 years. The trip coincides with the 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, underscoring India’s commitment to regional cooperation.

While Prime Minister Modi previously visited Thailand in 2019 for the ASEAN Summit, that was for a multilateral event. This visit marks his first official bilateral trip to Thailand, where he will engage in high-level talks with the Thai Prime Minister.

Strengthening Thailand-India Relations

On April 3, Prime Minister Modi will receive an official welcome from Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at Government House, followed by high-level talks, a full delegation meeting, and the signing of key agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). The leaders will then hold a joint press conference to outline the outcomes of their discussions.

Later, around 1 PM, Prime Minister Paetongtarn will host a luncheon in honor of Prime Minister Modi, reflecting the significance of India-Thailand relations. The visit will focus on strengthening bilateral and multilateral ties, addressing regional challenges, and expanding cooperation in various fields.

6th BIMSTEC Summit Participation

During the visit, Prime Minister Paetongtarn and Prime Minister Modi will formally announce the elevation of Thailand-India relations to a strategic partnership, signaling a new era of cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi will also attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, hosted by Thailand on April 4, where leaders from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand will discuss strategies for enhancing connectivity, trade, security, and climate change mitigation under the theme “BIMSTEC – Prosperous, Resilient, and Open.”

Signing of Key MoUs

A key highlight of the visit will be the signing of four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in:

  • Science and Education – Promoting joint research and academic exchange programs.
  • Culture – Strengthening cultural heritage collaboration.
  • Digital Technology – Advancing digital innovation and infrastructure.
  • International Development Cooperation – Enhancing global development partnerships.

Special Ceremony for the International Tripitaka Sajjhaya Edition

Prime Minister Modi will also attend a ceremony presenting the International Tripitaka Sajjhaya Edition, emphasizing the deep cultural and spiritual ties between India and Thailand through their shared Buddhist heritage.

Advancing Regional Cooperation

Thailand plays a key role in India’s “Act East” policy, and this visit is expected to strengthen trade, investment, and technological collaboration. The BIMSTEC Summit provides a platform to address regional security, sustainable development, and multilateral partnerships, further solidifying Thailand and India’s strategic relations.
