Bangkok, Thailand – H.E. Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, welcomed H.E. Mr. Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister of Singapore, on the occasion of his official visit to Thailand. This marks the first visit by a foreign leader to Thailand under Prime Minister Shinawatra’s tenure.
During a joint press conference held at Government House in Bangkok, both leaders announced key initiatives aimed at bolstering bilateral relations. They reaffirmed the importance of high-level exchanges at various levels, particularly as the two nations prepare to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Thailand–Singapore diplomatic relations in 2025.
Expanding Cooperation and Strengthening Economic Ties
The bilateral discussions covered a wide range of topics, including efforts to increase trade and investment, promote linkages between financial systems, and foster collaborations in the capital market and the security and defense industry.
Mr. Wong emphasized the potential for cooperation in the green economy, citing Thailand’s advancements in green power generation through hydrogen and biofuels. He highlighted the prospect of an implementation agreement on carbon credits collaboration, which he described as a gateway to new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Food security was another focal point, with Ms. Paetongtarn expressing Thailand’s readiness to enhance Singapore’s food supply through increased exports of premium rice and organic eggs.
Scholarships and Educational Collaboration
To strengthen educational ties, Mr. Wong announced scholarships for Thai civil servants to pursue master’s programs at leading universities in Singapore. Ms. Paetongtarn welcomed this initiative, expressing appreciation for Singapore’s support and emphasizing the role of education in fostering long-term collaboration.
Exploring New Areas of Cooperation
Both sides agreed to explore new avenues for collaboration, such as digital economy integration, green economy initiatives, and carbon credit trading. They also exchanged views on critical regional issues, including the situation in Myanmar, drug trafficking, and combating online scams.
As Singapore and Thailand continue to deepen their partnership, these initiatives underscore their shared commitment to sustainable development, economic resilience, and regional stability.
