Talat Phlu Market, a historic marketplace in Bangkok’s Thonburi district, has officially reopened following an extensive renovation aimed at transforming it into a premier destination for food lovers and community tourism. The reopening ceremony on February 3 was presided over by Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon and attended by key officials, including Tosak Chotimongkol, Chairman of the Advisors to the Governor of Bangkok, and Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Having served the community for over 37 years, the former Ratchadaphisek Market had deteriorated over time, prompting the Bangkok Market Office to spearhead the renovation. The initiative is part of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) effort to modernize public markets in line with its nine good governance policies. The revamped market now features 128 food stalls offering a diverse range of ready-to-eat meals, a la carte dishes, and traditional Thai desserts, alongside a fresh produce section and a general grocery area.
Improvements extend beyond culinary offerings, with upgraded infrastructure, premium restroom facilities, enhanced waste management, and a grease-trapping system to protect public drains. A designated waiting area for public transport has also been introduced to improve accessibility.
Deputy Governor Sanon highlighted Talat Phlu’s charm as a community-driven space and emphasized its role in Bangkok’s creative district development initiative. He outlined a vision to elevate the market into a “Premium Market” by 2025, integrating sustainable tourism practices, cultural flea markets, and walking streets to attract visitors while boosting the grassroots economy.
“Our vision is to establish a recognizable identity for this area, attracting tourists while fostering the grassroots economy and promoting a circular economy. Efforts will include community-driven tourism management, cultural flea markets, and vibrant walking streets, all rooted in a commitment to sustainable tourism. It is essential that these initiatives be led by the local community, cultivating cooperation and active participation to ensure a sustainable future for the creative district,” Sanon stated.
The renovation, carried out in collaboration with a private company, included epoxy flooring, upgraded drainage, and improved electrical and plumbing systems. The Bangkok Market Office aims for Talat Phlu Market to serve as a model for other public markets, offering a clean, modern, and well-managed environment for shoppers and vendors alike.
Now open daily from 5:00 AM, Talat Phlu Market is poised to become a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists looking to experience Bangkok’s vibrant street food culture and community-driven tourism.
