His theological education, along with a degree in Canon Law, laid the foundation for his future roles in both pastoral care and Church governance.
A Missionary Life in Peru
One of the most defining periods of Pope Leo XIV’s life was his missionary work in Peru. In the late 1980s, he joined the Augustinian mission in Chulucanas, a region in northern Peru, where he dedicated his efforts to serving local communities. Over the years, he held various leadership roles, including director of formation and judicial vicar in the Archdiocese of Trujillo.
His time in Peru also saw him teaching Canon Law, Patristics, and Moral Theology at the Major Seminary of San Carlos y San Marcelo, helping train future priests. His commitment to pastoral care and the spiritual growth of the faithful in Peru cemented his reputation as a compassionate and dedicated Church leader.
Leadership in the Church
Prevost’s leadership abilities were quickly recognized, and in 1999, he was appointed as Provincial Prior of the Augustinian Province of “Mother of Good Counsel” in Chicago. A few years later, he was elected Prior General of the Augustinian Order, where he served two terms, overseeing the Order’s global activities.
In 2014, Pope Francis appointed Prevost as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo, Peru. This role marked his elevation to the episcopate, and shortly after, in 2015, he was named Bishop of Chiclayo. His leadership in the diocese, along with his involvement in the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, further solidified his reputation within the global Church.
