History of World Mental Health Day
Let us tell you that World Mental Health Day has started from the year 1992. It was started at the initiative of Richard Hunter, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and the World Federation for Mental Health. More than 150 countries were involved in this federation. In 1994, the then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Eugene Brody, suggested celebrating this day with the theme. Since then, World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10 October to explain the importance of mental health.
This is the theme of the year 2021
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2021, Dr Ingrid Daniels, President of the World Federation for Mental Health, has kept this year’s ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World’. The motive behind choosing this theme is that in today’s corona era, everyone from rich to poor is suffering from mental diseases. But, even today, discrimination has increased a lot in the society according to the social and economic status.

Due to the changing lifestyle, we are getting entangled in our stressful life, due to which we are getting surrounded by many mental problems like stigma, dementia, hysteria, anxiety, selflessness. In case of any kind of mental problem, we must seek medical help. Through this day, an attempt is made to explain the importance of mental health among the people. Along with this, their friends, relatives and society also need to understand this.
India’s position on mental health
According to a national survey conducted in the year 2015-16, one in every 8 people in India i.e. about 17.5 crore people, is suffering from some kind of mental illness. Of these, 2.5 crore people are suffering from serious diseases. They need mental help immediately.
