Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire after an attack by the Russian military. It is Ukraine’s largest power plant and could spell a catastrophe if the fuel rods fail.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it contains 15 nuclear energy reactors. If the cooling system is destroyed, it could lead to a meltdown. At the moment, the radiation levels are normal.
Russians attacked the area to try to encircle the Ukrainian army. Also, as the supplier of 20% of Ukraine’s electrical energy, it can disrupt many things when taken offline. This could mean the loss of communication systems, heating, and electricity for Ukrainians.
Plant personnel is trying to contain the fire. They have also informed that essential equipment was not damaged. If electricity or fuel is cut off from the plant, it could cause the cooling system not to function. This will trigger an uncontrollable nuclear reaction that can set off radiation.
Spokesperson Andrii Tuz posted that a lot of technical equipment was hit. One of six power generation units is working.
American Nuclear Society President, Steven Nesbit urged both sides not to continue the fight in the area. “We also urge the securing of off-site power supplies for every nuclear facility, uninterrupted transportation to and from sites for plant workers and supply chains; and unfettered communications with regulators and inspectors.”
Enerhodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov posted earlier on social media. “A threat to world security!!! As a result of relentless shelling by the enemy of the buildings and blocks of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire!!!”
“I demand, stop! Immediately stop shelling the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant point-blank,” the mayor said in a video message.
