The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported a decrease in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 30, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 231,661 new cases reported across India.
Kerala has reported 50,812 cases followed by Karnataka registering 33,337 cases, and Maharashtra stands at 29,971 cases at this time. Today’s number is slightly lower than yesterday’s and below the 300,00 that was previously reported.
Although signs of the cases declining are beginning to show, many health ministers still recommend caution. They recommend vigilance and not to lower our guards. The UK is reporting a new subtype of the omicron variant. It is currently labeled as Omicron BA.2 sub-lineage. This particular variant seems to be more contagious than the original omicron virus. There are no signs that it is deadlier however, many health officials still advise precautions. This variant is now found in over 40 countries around the world.
“While growth rates can be overestimated in early analyses of a new variant, the apparent growth advantage is currently substantial,” the UKHSA said.
A linked study shows that the vaccine efficacy remains to be the same. Although there is a slight increase in transmissibility, further studies need to be done. The current symptoms and effects of the mutation are still unknown.
