History and Significance of Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on the 8th of March to honour women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It is a day to acknowledge the progress made in gender equality, raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for women’s rights, and celebrate women’s accomplishments thus far.
The significance of Women’s Day is deeply rooted in history. The first Women’s Day was observed in 1909 in the United States. It gained momentum in Europe during the early 20th century as women fought for their right to vote, access to education and better working conditions.
In 1975, the United Nations officially recognised the valiant efforts made by women in the past and declared 8th March to be celebrated as Women’s Day on a global scale.
The First UN Conference on Women
The first world conference on the status of women was convened in Mexico City that coincided with the 1975 International Women’s Year to remind the international community that discrimination against women remained an ongoing issue in various parts of the world.
During this convention, three objectives were identified pertaining to equality, peace, and development for the coming decade:
- Full gender equality and the elimination of gender discrimination
- The integration and full participation of women in the development
- An increased contribution by women towards strengthening world peace
Women’s Day is a call to action to support women’s rights, challenge gender stereotypes, and empower future generations of women. It is a day to honour the trailblazers who paved the way for future generations, such as suffragettes who fought for women’s right to vote, activists who fought for civil rights, and leaders who continue to push for gender equality.
Flawless (H K) Company, a 30-year-old manufacturer and wholesaler of round and fancy-shaped diamonds, conducted a magnificent multifaceted event to increase awareness about women’s challenges and advocate for initiatives that encourage women’s empowerment.
