Thailand COVID-19 Cases March 22, 2022 Update

Thailand Ministry of Health reports 21,382 new COVID-19 cases and an additional 83 deaths since yesterday. The ministry also announced an additional 24,824 patients recovered from the COVID-19 virus.

70% is the target for elderly vaccination before Songkran according to the Ministry of Public Health. They are the most vulnerable population due to their age and underlying issues. Director of the general communicable diseases division, Wicharn Pawan identified it as a factor in last year’s surge in cases. After the Songkran celebrations in the previous years, and slow vaccination rollouts, the cases surged across the country. Now that the Songkran celebrations are back, the government would like to prevent this scenario from happening.

“The ministry won’t be taking any chances this year and will speed up the rollout of booster shots for the elderly before the holiday exodus begins,” he said.

“Elderly citizens who are due for a booster shot should get them before Songkran. About three million doses have been prepared for this age group,” he said.

In Western Europe, the “perfect storm” has resulted in a more contagious Omicron BA. 2 subvariant. Britain, France, and Germany have seen the return of the pandemic after curbs have been lifted. Despite the increase in cases, these countries have pushed to remove their remaining curbs. They have also lifter part of their travel restrictions.

The new omicron subvariant has “stealth capabilities” as it is most times, hard to detect. It is also said to be 30% more contagious than the original subvariant. Most experts say that the lifting restrictions and reopening of borders created a “perfect storm” for the virus to mutate. This would also open the doors for more variants to develop in the near future. World Health Organization also encourages wealthy countries to donate vaccines to those unfortunate ones.
