Thailand Reaps Diplomatic and Economic Gains as Host of 6th BIMSTEC Summit

Bangkok, April 4, 2025 — Thailand emerged as a key diplomatic and economic winner after successfully hosting the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok from April 2 to 4, bringing together the heads of state and government from seven South and Southeast Asian nations. The high-level regional gathering, held under the theme of strengthening regional cooperation and resilience, reinforced Thailand’s growing influence on the Bay of Bengal geopolitical stage.

As the host nation, Thailand demonstrated its leadership role in BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation), which comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The summit focused on enhancing economic integration, regional connectivity, and cooperation in trade, security, and disaster resilience.

Boost in Regional Influence

Hosting the summit elevated Thailand’s diplomatic stature as a bridge between South and Southeast Asia. Analysts noted that the successful organization of the summit, despite ongoing regional tensions and humanitarian challenges, reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to multilateralism and its strategic positioning in Asia’s evolving power dynamics.

Economic and Trade Benefits

Thailand utilized the summit to highlight its flagship Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), inviting investment from BIMSTEC partners. By promoting new trade corridors and discussing tariff relaxations and digital trade, Thailand has taken significant steps toward becoming a regional trade and logistics hub.

Strengthening Connectivity

A key focus of the summit was on improving physical and digital connectivity. Thailand pushed forward the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, as well as cross-border energy and transport links. These projects are expected to enhance Thailand’s regional supply chain integration and boost exports.

Soft Power and Tourism Promotion

The international exposure generated by the summit also boosted Thailand’s tourism and cultural diplomacy. With global media attention focused on Bangkok, the country seized the opportunity to promote its rich cultural heritage, hospitality industry, and tourist destinations.

Strengthening Strategic Partnerships

Thailand also used the occasion to deepen its strategic engagement with India, Southeast Asia’s key economic and geopolitical player. Bilateral dialogues during the summit opened doors for future cooperation in areas such as defense, renewable energy, and education.

Looking Ahead

With the 6th BIMSTEC Summit concluded, Thailand has not only set the stage for stronger regional integration but has also strengthened its own position as a central player in Asia’s future. The outcomes of the summit are expected to contribute significantly to Thailand’s long-term goals of sustainable development, economic diversification, and regional peace.
