Thailand’s 10,000-Baht Digital Wallet Scheme Begins, Benefiting Millions

The much-anticipated 10,000-baht handout for millions of Thais officially kicked off today, September 25, after months of anticipation and planning. Initially delayed due to funding concerns, the scheme gained momentum following the government’s decision to adjust the 2024 and 2025 budgets, along with legislative efforts to raise the necessary 549 billion baht ($15.61 billion).

Former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had announced on July 15 that citizens over the age of 16, earning less than 840,000 baht ($23,710) annually and with savings under 500,000 baht ($14,072), would be eligible to receive the one-time payment. The distribution, however, started later than expected, with eligible recipients now being gradually paid out over several days, starting today.

Who Is Eligible?

State welfare cardholders, disabled individuals, and other vulnerable groups will be prioritized, with payments scheduled from September 25 to 30. Among the 36.4 million people who registered for the scheme, roughly 10 million state welfare cardholders and disabled individuals are expected to receive their payments first. Other registered applicants will undergo eligibility checks by government agencies, verifying their income and age requirements.

How to Apply

Citizens can apply through the Thang Rat mobile app, which requires them to upload their government ID, agree to terms, and undergo facial scanning for security verification. Those approved will have six months to spend the money within the district listed on their ID cards, ensuring the funds stimulate local economies.

Where Can the Money Be Spent?

Recipients must use the digital wallet for select necessities at small, local businesses. Purchases of gift cards, fuel, jewelry, electronics, alcohol, and tobacco products are restricted, as are online or department store purchases.

The initiative aims to provide immediate financial relief while boosting local economies across Thailand. The government will continue processing applications and verifying recipients over the coming days, with further payments expected in the following weeks.

This long-awaited initiative marks a significant step in providing financial support to vulnerable groups, ensuring the funds reach those most in need.
