Kerala has reported 4,069 at this time. Maharashtra registered 806 cases, and Tamil Nandu stands at 788 cases at this time. Today’s number is slightly lower than yesterday’s and below the 100,000 mark that was previously reported.

This is the fifteenth day that the cases have fallen below 100,000. Despite the decrease in cases, public precaution is still advised. Social distancing, vaccination, and wearing masks is still recommended.

Due to the consistent decline of cases, it is likely that regular international flights will resume on March 15. The flights will follow the standard operating procedures at the Indian Airports for both arrivals and departures. The Civil Aviation Ministry has not made any official statement but is in discussions with the Health Ministry.

Flights were previously suspended due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country. However, now that most states fall under the 1,000 cases mark, the country is ready to reopen.

WHO Warning

Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic in Wuhan, the virus has mutated several times. The deadliest was the Delta variant. Then came Omicron, however scientists who studied the variant said it was not life-threatening. This has led to many countries beginning to relax on their measures. Relaxation includes opening borders, removing lockdowns and curfews.

WHO advises not to take the decision in haste. “We do recognize this desire to open up, this desire to go back to normal. But if that desire to go back to completely normal, in that sense, is going to sustain this pandemic going forward than much longer it needs to be, then we really need to think about that,” Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Program Mike Ryan said at a briefing on Thursday.

He warned that if there is a new variant, then it will be hard to put these measures back in place. Also, he suggests a slow and steady approach to reopening. He did acknowledge uncertainty on the mutation of the virus, however, he said it’s better to be cautious.

Several states and territories have begun relaxing their COVID measures due to the drop in cases. This includes reopening of schools and resumption of physical classes. Delhi, Kerala, Odisha, and Gujarat were among those that have reopened.

The Supreme Court will also resume hearing cases physically requiring the attendance of the lawyers. This will begin on Wednesday. Although there will be no audience, lawyers and litigants must be present.

“In view of the significant decline in the number of Covid-19 cases and positivity rate, and in the light of the various instructions issued by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Government of NCT of Delhi vide Order dated February 4, 2022, the Chief Justice of India, in consultation with the Committee of Judges, has been pleased to direct that the Modified Standard Operating Procedure notified on October 7, 2021, for hearing before the Court shall stand revived, and all hearings before the Court from February 14, 2021, shall be in accordance with the said Modified Standard Operating Procedure notified on October 7, 2021,” a notice said.

INDIA COVID Cases Update as of January 29, 2022

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported a decrease in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 29, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 234,165 new cases reported across India.

Kerala has reported 54,537 cases followed by Karnataka registering 31,189 cases, and Tamil Nandu stands at 26,553 cases at this time. Today’s number is slightly lower than yesterday’s and below the 300,00 that was previously reported.

MOHFW has also released new guidelines on international travelers. The new update contained revised protocols regarding boarding, arrival, and requirements.

Requirements

Must submit the following:
1. Submit complete and factual information in self-declaration form on the online Air Suvidha portal before the scheduled travel, including last 14 days travel details.

Upload a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR report*. The test should have been conducted within 72 hrs prior to undertaking the journey.
- Each passenger shall also submit a declaration with respect to authenticity of the

report and will be liable for criminal prosecution if found otherwise.

Provide an undertaking on the portal or otherwise to Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. The undertaking states that they would abide by the decision of the appropriate government authority to undergo home/institutional quarantine/ self-health monitoring, as warranted.
Travellers from certain specified Countries (based on epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in those Countries) are identified for additional follow up.
All travellers who need to undertake testing on arrival, should preferably pre-book the test online on Air Suvidha Portal, to facilitate timely testing.

INDIA COVID Cases Update as of January 28, 2022

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported a decrease in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 28, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 250,186 new cases reported across India.

Kerala has reported 51,739 cases followed by Karnataka registering 38,083 cases, and Tamil Nandu stands at 28,515 cases at this time. Today’s number is slightly lower than yesterday’s and below the 300,00 that was previously reported.

According to the latest updates, the omicron variant is 94% of the positive samples in Kerala. Omicron is now the dominant variant on the latest wave of cases. Many have imposed curbs and measures to contain the spread.

The Union Home Ministry extended the existing measures until February 28. This is because of the new wave of cases. 407 districts are reporting over a 10 % positivity rate. This prompts the government to extend the curbs.

Tamil Nandu is lifting some of its curbs on February 1. Relaxed measures include reopening of schools. Removal of night curfew and weekend curfew. Schools except for kindergarten, nursery, and colleges are expected to open. Chief Ministry MK Stalin announced that no night curfews from January 28 and Sunday lockdowns are withdrawn from January 30 onwards. Restaurants, cinema theatres, clubs, amusement parks, bakeries, lodges, gyms, garment and jewelry shops, spas, and salons are allowed to function with 50 percent occupancy.

INDIA COVID Cases Update as of January 25, 2022

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has reported an increase in COVID cases since yesterday. As of January 25, 2022 (8:00 IST), there has been a total of 226,715 new cases reported across India.

Karnataka has reported 46,426 cases followed by Tamil Nandu registering 30,215 cases, and Maharashtra stands at 28,286 cases at this time. Kerala has not reported any additional cases at the moment of this report’s publishing. It is also the first day that we have seen a significant decline in the number of cases.

Since the announcement made by INSACOG that the virus is now on community transmission level, experts say a sharp rise is ahead. Although hospitals have seen a decline in cases in the major cities, other states are seeing more patients. It is also noted that the omicron variant is mild in terms of symptoms.

It is quite hard to track the actual cases given the increase in the use of ATK test kits. These kits can be bought from groceries and administered at home. This concerns some experts as it now becomes hard to track genome sequencing. One of their main concerns is the mutation of the virus into a different strain. To track the mutation, an RT-PCR test must be conducted and samples must be submitted for sequencing. This is not possible for a disposable ATK kit.

At the moment both Delta and Omicron variants are in circulation in the community.
